Fashion label art collective FOFARED Director and co-founder Pengiran Abdul Farid bin Pengiran Idrus says that the team are keen to market the best of Brunei’s modern and traditional fashion to the Indonesian market.

“We are really excited to be at IFW 2024. This is the first time a group from Brunei is taking part in the event. Indonesia is a country with similar culture and fashion to the Sultanate. I see there is a potential to market Brunei’s art and crafts, especially kain tenunan in Indonesia,” says Idrus.

Idrus says that his label will showcase Brunei’s traditional kain tenunan during the expo under the theme Keindahan seni, adat dan budaya, walaupun melintasi waktu.

“We collaborated with Little Ummi to bring the original kain tenunan Brunei and the digitally printed kain. It is a fusion of modern and traditional fashion, and we will be showcasing nine designs that blend the authentic kain tenunan Bruenei with digital-print fabrics on the runway,” says Idrus.

According to Idrus, this innovative approach not only preserves the traditional aspects of Bruneian fashion but also introduces a fresh, contemporary twist that makes it appealing to, and culturally accessible for younger demographics.

FOFARED is a platform for local youth artists. Its aim is to develop emerging talent who are skilled in various creative mediums and mentor them to turn their creative disciplines into income.

Earlier this month, Indonesian Minister of Trade, Zulkifli Hasan attended the fashion parade for Klamby’s modest fashion works, Archipelago Series, which is one of a series of activities at Plaza Indonesia Fashion Week 2024 in Jakarta.

According to Minister Hasan, domestic designers are currently on par with fashion works abroad, both in design and quality.

“Be proud, defend and buy made in Indonesia,” says Minister Hasan.

Minister Hasan says that the Ministry of Trade is hosting the Jakarta Muslim Fashion Week on 9–12 October 2024 at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition BSD City, Tangerang, back to back with Trade Expo Indonesia.

Notes from the Editor: Indonesia Fashion Week 2024 will run from 27 to 31 March 2024 at the Jakarta Convention Centre.
