The State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan hosted an international conference to explore strategies for advancing its energy industry while ensuring ecological compatibility this month.
The event underscored Turkmenistan’s commitment to sustainable energy practices and environmental protection, showcasing scientific innovations alongside cultural presentations, including a performance by the Kuvvat music and song ensemble.
The electric power sector remains a cornerstone of Turkmenistan’s economy, and the government is heavily invested in its modernization, infrastructure expansion, and transition toward renewable energy.
A notable milestone in this transition is the construction of the country’s first hybrid solar-wind power plant in the Serdar district of the Balkan province. With a total capacity of 10 megawatts (7 MW solar and 3 MW wind), this facility represents a crucial step in aligning Turkmenistan’s energy production with global climate goals.
Executed by Turkish company Çalık Enerji following an international tender, this plant highlights Turkmenistan’s ambition to leverage renewable energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate environmental impact.
The conference provided a platform for in-depth discussions on sustainable energy.
Experts presented on topics such as regional practices in green energy development, the potential of renewable energy sources, hydrogen as a future fuel, and the impacts of climate change on energy systems.
Speakers emphasized the importance of advancing solar thermal systems and highlighted the challenges and opportunities in transitioning to green energy.
The event also explored integrating energy-efficient technologies into construction, with discussions on issuing green certifications for new and planned buildings to promote sustainable urban development.
Contributing to the international scope of the conference, speakers from Kazakhstan, Georgia, Latvia, and Poland shared insights into successful practices and innovations in their respective countries.
These contributions underlined the importance of international collaboration in addressing global energy and environmental challenges. By adopting similar strategies, the Turkmenistan Government says that it aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its national energy mix, paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
In addition to the conference, international specialists held a training seminar titled “Stable Energy Communication in Central Asia” for SEIT faculty and students.
This session provided hands-on learning opportunities about sustainable energy practices and communication strategies, equipping participants with the skills needed to drive future developments in the sector.
At the end of the seminar, certificates were awarded to participants, reflecting the collaborative efforts between Turkmenistan and international partners.
These activities were organized under a plan agreed upon by the European Union Mission in Turkmenistan and the Turkmen government.
By tapping into this resource, the Government says that it is working to meet growing energy demands, improve energy security, and contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.
Turkmenistan’s energy policy includes a commitment to achieving zero growth in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, a goal supported by initiatives like the hybrid solar-wind plant and increasing investments in renewable energy.
