The Arab League is preparing to send a special envoy to Damascus to engage with Syria’s new leadership following the recent exit of President Bashar al-Assad.

According to official reports, the Arab League aims to open communication channels and assess the evolving political landscape in the country.

The mission will include meetings with Syria’s transitional government and representatives from various factions of Syrian society.

The goal is to understand the new administration’s perspective and chart a roadmap for reintegrating Syria into the Arab League’s operational framework.

Diplomats involved have emphasized the importance of fostering inclusive governance.

“The success of Syria’s transition depends on embracing all voices within its society,” says the head of the Syrian National Coalition, H.E Hadi al-Bahra.

Syria’s membership in the Arab League was suspended in 2011 due to the government’s violent response to peaceful protests, sparking a devastating civil war. In 2023, the country was readmitted, with then-President Assad attending the summit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The recent regime change has now prompted the Arab League to reassess its engagement strategy and ensure stability during this critical transition.

The new Syrian leadership, led by a coalition of opposition groups, has pledged to establish an inclusive government.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shibani, a key figure in the transitional administration, recently met with Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman to outline Syria’s vision for governance and economic recovery.

Al-Shibani described the coalition’s commitment to unity, stating, “Our priority is rebuilding trust among Syrians and fostering partnerships for a stable future,” says H.E Al-Shibani.

Saudi Arabia, a long-time supporter of Syrian opposition groups, has expressed cautious optimism. A Saudi official underscored the importance of constructive engagement, highlighting the need to protect minority rights and prevent further instability.

The Kingdom has pledged humanitarian aid and is exploring additional support mechanisms with regional allies.

Other nations in the region have also expressed interest in aiding Syria’s reconstruction, emphasizing that regional stability hinges on Syria’s recovery.

The collective effort aims to accelerate economic rebuilding and create sustainable pathways for displaced Syrians to return home.

The Arab League’s approach could help to reshape Syria’s trajectory and bolster regional stability. By engaging with all stakeholders, the League aims to foster reconciliation and development while ensuring that diverse voices are represented in Syria’s future.

To this end, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, participated in the Arab Ministerial Meetings on Syria, which kicked off this week in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Sheikh Abdullah participated in the meeting to discuss the overall developments in the Syrian Arab Republic and ways to enhance regional and international efforts aimed at ensuring Syria’s unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty, and the security and stability of its people.

Sheikh Abdullah highlighted that this expanded ministerial meeting reflects the importance of collective regional, international, and UN efforts to support the Syrian people at all levels, meeting their “legitimate aspirations” for lasting security, stability, prosperity, and development.

He also reiterated the UAE’s firm position in supporting Syria’s independence and sovereignty over all of its territories, stressing the importance of unity and cohesion among the Syrian people.
