In a significant move towards recognizing and celebrating the contributions of Muslim Americans, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed January as Muslim American Heritage Month.

Governor Whitmer, who alleges to have been a strong advocate for inclusivity throughout her tenure, made the proclamation on January 1, 2025, marking the beginning of a month-long celebration dedicated to acknowledging the significant roles that Muslim Americans have played in the state’s development.

Governor Whitmer says that her decision to establish this month was driven by the desire to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the Muslim community’s contributions. In her proclamation, she highlighted the historical presence of Muslims in the United States, noting that Muslim-majority Morocco was the first country to recognize the United States in 1786.

According to the Governor, this long-standing relationship underscores the deep-rooted connections between Muslim communities and the broader American society.

Michigan is home to nearly 250,000 Muslims, with significant populations in cities like Dearborn and Hamtramck. These communities have made substantial contributions to various fields, including science, technology, arts, and business.

According to the Governor, the establishment of Muslim American Heritage Month is a response to the growing recognition of the need for inclusivity and representation.

“During Muslim American Heritage Month, we recognize and celebrate the profound impact that Muslim Americans have had on our state and our nation. Let’s honour their achievements, reflect on their history, and recommit to building a Michigan where everyone can thrive,” says Governor Whitmer.

In response, one Michigan resident, Ahmad Alkaabi, expressed his gratitude, saying, “This recognition means a lot to us. It acknowledges our contributions and helps to bridge gaps in understanding and acceptance. As one of the largest and most diverse Muslim populations in the country, the Michigan Muslim community plays a vital role in driving economic growth, fostering innovation, and enriching the cultural tapestry of our state.”

Imam Kip Curnutt, from the At-Tawheed Islamic Center, shared his thoughts on the significance of the month too.

“So many times, people might be working alongside or living alongside Muslims and never even realize it. I think it’s great for that to be recognized. It helps to highlight the diversity and unity within our community,” says Imam Curnutt.

Throughout January, various cities in Michigan hosted cultural festivals and exhibitions showcasing traditional music, dance, art, and cuisine, providing an opportunity for people of all backgrounds to learn about and appreciate Muslim culture.

Educational institutions and community centers also organized workshops and seminars focused on the history and contributions of Muslim Americans.

Many Muslim organizations and community groups engaged in community service projects during the month too. These initiatives included food drives, health clinics, and volunteer work.

Commenting on the gesture, Commission on Middle Eastern American Affairs Chair Suzanne Sukkar says that the Muslim-American community that has made significant contributions locally and across the country “that are enriching and to be celebrated”.

“Here in Michigan, we proudly celebrate Muslim-Americans, and religious diversity, where people of different faiths live and work, with respect and in friendship, making our communities stronger, together,” says Sukkar.
