Kuwait Endorses Iraq’s USD 17 Billion Road Infrastructure Project at COP29

At the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, Kuwait's Crown Prince, H.H. Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, reaffirmed his nation’s support for Iraq’s landmark road infrastructure project, promising 100,000 jobs for the duration of the project.

At the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, Kuwait’s Crown Prince, H.H. Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, reaffirmed his nation’s support for Iraq’s landmark road infrastructure project, promising 100,000 jobs for the duration of the project.

This ambitious initiative seeks to connect the Iraqi port of Al-Faw to Western Europe, transforming the country into a regional transport hub and positioning it as a key player in international trade.

H.H. Crown Prince Al-Sabah, highlighted during his meeting with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, on the mutual benefits of the project, stating that progress in Iraq directly contributes to Kuwait’s advancement.

“The importance of bolstering fraternal relations and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors to serve the shared interests of both nations”, says H.H Crown Prince Al- Sabah.

The project, estimated at USD 17 billion, is envisioned to drive economic growth, enhance trade connectivity, and foster closer ties within the region.

Both leaders expressed a shared vision for stronger bilateral relations and stressed the necessity of Iraq and Kuwait playing proactive roles in the region.

They agreed to activate joint committees to address key issues, signalling a practical and committed approach to resolving longstanding challenges.

The meeting also reaffirmed their mutual commitment to addressing outstanding matters and enhancing cooperation to benefit their peoples and governments.

President Rashid extended an invitation to H.H. Crown Prince Al-Sabah to visit Iraq and witness the country’s sectoral developments firsthand.

He further highlighted the interconnectedness of regional challenges, such as the situations in Lebanon and Gaza, with Iraq and Kuwait’s affairs.

President Rashid called for a comprehensive approach to these issues, advocating for regional solidarity amidst ongoing challenges.

The Development Road project represents a pivotal step in Iraq’s efforts to reclaim its historical role as a vital corridor for trade and commerce. By linking its southern hinterlands to the Turkish border and beyond, Iraq aims to position itself as a critical bridge between the Middle East and Europe.
