President of the Moroccan Anti-Doping Agency (AMAD) Dr. Fatima Abouali is elected as the President of the Executive Bureau of the African Union of Sports Medicine in late January 2025 in Cairo Egypt.

According to reports, Dr Abouali, a medical doctor specializing in pharmaco-toxicology, has been a prominent figure in sports medicine and anti-doping efforts in Africa.

Prior to her election, she served as the interim president of UAMS following the passing of former president Constant Antoine Roux in July 2024.

In addition to her role at AMAD, she represents the Moroccan government in anti-doping matters at UNESCO and the European Council and serves as the first vice president of the African Federation for Sports Medicine.

The African Union of Sports Medicine, established in 1982 in Algiers, aims to promote sports medicine across the continent. UAMS focuses on education, research, and clinical programs to enhance healthcare in African sports. It plays a crucial role in advancing knowledge on athlete healthcare, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and anti-doping policies to ensure fairness in sports.

Dr Abouali’s leadership is expected to bring renewed energy to UAMS, further developing programs that prioritize the health and safety of athletes. With her extensive experience in the field, she aims to reinforce existing policies and introduce new strategies that align with international standards.

This includes strengthening cooperation with international anti-doping bodies, increasing awareness campaigns on doping risks, and expanding access to medical training for sports professionals across Africa.

Her election highlights Morocco’s growing influence in international sports medicine and its commitment to fostering a clean sports environment. The country has been a key player in the global fight against doping and has worked tirelessly to ensure that African athletes receive the best possible medical support.

Under Dr Abouali’s leadership, Morocco is expected to take a leading role in the implementation of policies that safeguard the integrity of African sports.

The challenges facing sports medicine in Africa are significant. Many regions still lack the necessary medical facilities, funding, and expertise to provide athletes with high-quality healthcare.

One of Dr Abouali’s stated goals will be to address these disparities by pushing for greater investment in sports medicine infrastructure. Through her work, she says that she hopes to build a network of professionals dedicated to supporting athletes at all levels.

Her appointment is also a breakthrough for women in sports leadership, paving the way for more female professionals to take on influential roles in African sports organizations.
