China Unicom (Middle East) Operations Limited officially launched its operations in Dubai United Arab Emirates this week, marking a pivotal milestone in the telecommunications giant’s global expansion strategy.
This move underscores China Unicom’s commitment to advancing digital infrastructure and fostering international collaboration, particularly in the Middle East, a region undergoing rapid digital transformation.
The inauguration ceremony was a high-profile event attended by over 200 representatives from leading enterprises and key stakeholders.
Notable attendees included the Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in the UAE Zhu Lian; Chairman of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in the UAE Chen Xinrong, and a representative from a UAE telecommunications company Jawad Bentajar.
Representatives from major enterprises like Bank of China, China State Construction, COSCO Shipping, and electric vehicle manufacturer NIO were also present, reflecting the broad significance of this strategic launch.
In her opening remarks, Chairman and CEO of China Unicom Global Meng Shusen, reiterated the company’s dedication to fostering shared growth and collaboration.
“The pivotal role of China Unicom in driving digital infrastructure development across the Middle East and enhancing cooperation between China and the UAE in the information technology sector”, says Shusen.
She underscored the company’s plans to leverage its extensive international network resources and operational expertise to deliver integrated solutions tailored to the needs of Chinese enterprises in the UAE and local businesses seeking to expand internationally.
According to Shusen the goal is to serve as a bridge, enabling seamless digital connectivity between nations and businesses.
“The launch not only strengthens China Unicom’s position as a global telecom leader but also reinforces the UAE’s position as a regional digital hub,” says Shusen.
On another note Chinese Chamber of Commerce Chairman Chen Xinrong emphasised the alignment of China Unicom’s Middle East operations with the Belt and Road Initiative, a cornerstone of China’s global development strategy.
He pointed to the company’s contributions to developing digital infrastructure and the digital economy in Belt and Road countries, highlighting its potential to foster sustainable economic growth.
“China Unicom’s presence in the Middle East will catalyse the region’s drive for digital transformation and economic diversification,” says Xinrong.
UAE Telecom Representative Jawad Bentajar praised the strategic partnership with China Unicom, particularly in fields such as IoT, international roaming, and digital infrastructure.
He expressed optimism about deepening cooperation, especially in areas like smart city construction and enhanced network connectivity, which are critical for the region’s technological aspirations.
